Lower birth rate 'could hurt' Taiwanese society

According to the data revealed by the Taiwanese Health Minister, Taiwan has the lowest birth rate in the world and a rapidly ageing society could result in a spate of social troubles in the country.

Taiwan has a population of 23 million people, and only 1.07 children are born per woman which is even lower than Japan’s 1.57 per woman, as said by Yaung Chih-liang to United Daily News.

Further, Yaung said, “This is a tragic society. There is no war or other major disasters in Taiwan but the birth rate is plummeting so fast. It's unseen in other countries.”

According to him, the country is likely to face more problems including lack of care for the elderly and younger people are committing suicides due to the financial pressure.

Yaung added that more people would like to have pet instead of having kids. He told reporters that a growing number of baby shops have been going out of business while pet stores are growing faster.

The central administration has been providing number of incentives in a failed bid to support birth rate amid growing concerns that a severe manpower deficiency will create more social and economic worries.

Health Ministry has already informed that the fall in birth rate is because many women are choosing to marry at a later age or to stay single.
