Dog Must Undergo Vet Exam Before Winning Dog Show

Around 15 Breeds of dogs prone to health issues such as bulldogs, basset hounds, mastiffs, Chinese crested dogs, German shepherds and pugs will need to be check thoroughly by a vet before they collect a Best in Breed trophy.

BBC documentary claimed dogs bred for show were suffering a high degree of genetics illness.

The Kennel Club, which runs Crufts have decided that all ‘Best in Breed’ winners at the world famous dog show in 2012 and at all the club’s championship shows, they should have a clean bill of health from the event’s vet before their award is confirmed after that they will be allowed to continue to compete in the final.

In case any dog which will have three wins at championship shows, will also need to undergo a successful veterinary examination.

Vets will need to be looking for clinical signs of pain or discomfort such as breathing difficulties when taking moderate exercise, skin disorders, damage to the eyes and lameness.

Secretary of the Kennel club, Caroline Kisko said, “The Kennel Club must ensure, for the good of dogs, that only healthy dogs go home with prizes.”
