China to account for 80% of N Korea's int'l trade in 2010

According to fresh reports, North Korea’s commercial transactions with mainland China are likely to make 80% of NK’s international trade in the existing year that doe not include South Korea.

In a statement issued by the LG Economic Research Institute, the exclusion of the third month of this year, trade between North Korea and China has been constantly zooming as compared to the last year.

The statement added, “Bilateral trade is expected to grow by more than 20 percent from a year ago by year's end and make up 55 percent of all transactions between Pyongyang and the rest of the world including trade with South Korea.”

Reports showed that if South Korea also is not included, China’s proportion effectively totals to over 80 percent of North Korea’s external trade.

Talking to media, a researcher, Yoo Seung-kyung said that the North Korea’s dependence on the country has been progression on a steady note from 20.4 percent in 1999 to 52.6 percent in the last year.

The analyst said that the majority of noteworthy development of China’s involvement in North Korea was focused on Beijing’s proposals to strengthen its Northeastern areas and join these deals with the gaining of access to the East Sea via the port of Rajin.

Further, Mr. Yoo said, “If China secures rights to North Korea's Rajin and the nearby Sonbong area; it may deprive South Korea of business opportunities down the road and complicate the South's development plans for developing the North after reunification.”
