According to the data released by IDC Taiwan, a total of 26,017 units of projectors were sold in the country in the first three months of 2010, a fall of 55 percent quarter-on-quarter but jumps 28 percent year on year.
While talking to reporters, market analyst at IDC Taiwan’s PC & Peripherals Group, Mel Yeh said, “Demand from the educational sector declined sharply from a peak period in the fourth quarter of 2009, but the home and commercial markets saw clear sales recovery.”
The XGA models remained the market mainstream in the first quarter, commanding an 81 percent share of the overall market, down from 84 percent in the last quarter. In terms of lumens, those models with 2,500-3,000 lumens were the mainstream items, totaling for 34 percent of total shipments, a fall from 37.3 percent of the last quarter.
Further, Yeh also said that the high-lumens models, which go mainly to the educational market, would no longer enjoy as strong demand as 2009, and short-focus models would become vendors’ mainstream products in 2010.
In addition, Yeh continued that the 3D-ready and Full High-Definition (HD), or 1080p, models are expected to win a larger market share.
Meanwhile, the leading five projector vendors in the first three months were Epson, Optoma, BenQ, Sanyo and ViewSonic. The leading five together accounted for 79.5 percent of the complete market in the first quarter, an increase of 76.9 percent as compared to last quarter.
