According to reports, the Asian Taekwondo Union has announced that it may take sanctions against Taiwan by imposing a fine.
Initially, the union was looking forward to disqualify Taiwan from participating in international competitions. That was in protest of Taiwan's decision to suspend a Taiwanese referee.
On the whole, the argument started at the East Asian Games in Hong Kong in 2009. The Taiwanese referee ruled in favor of a South Korean taekwondo athlete, even though he attacked his Taiwanese opponent in the throat and knocked him out.
After days of communication and country's decision to reinstate the referee, the union is now planning a fine to put an end to the affair.
On the other hand, a spokesperson with Taiwan's Taekwondo association, Lee Shen Yang said, “The association has not yet received a formal response from the Asian Taekwondo Union.”
However, Lee also expressed his goodwill towards the union.
Further, talking to media, Lee said, “We have said that when the controversy is settled, we will invite the Asian Taewondo Union's chairman to Taiwan so that we can have further interaction with him. We also hope to make a bid for the Asian qualifying rounds for the 2012 London Olympics.”
