The President of Taiwan, Ma Ying-jeou, has recently inked a children's welfare declaration. The step was taken just ahead of International Children's Day on Sunday.
While talking to media, an interior ministry official said, “The declaration will vow to safeguard children's rights and protection, care for under-privileged children, and establish a more comprehensive childcare system.”
On the other hand, talking to reporters, President Ma said, “The government has introduced numerous measures over the past ten years to take care of children of all ages.”
Further, he added that though the policies can't satisfy every household, they at least provide a strong social safety net.
In the meantime, the federal government invited 250 children from areas devastated by Typhoon Morakot to enjoy a day of fun in the national capital.
The children ate cake with President Ma, Taipei City Mayor Hau Lung-bin, and interior minister Jiang Yi-huah. They also got to ride the High Speed Rail, Taipei's metro, and visit Taipei 101 among other sites.
